Restoring mangroves along the Puntland coast

Field teams and coastal communities are mapping and replanting degraded mangrove stands to protect fisheries and shorelines.

Mangroves are among the most valuable and most threatened coastal ecosystems in Somalia. They shelter juvenile fish, buffer communities from storm surges and store large amounts of carbon.

Working alongside fishing communities, TerraGap field teams have mapped remaining mangrove stands along sections of the Puntland coast using GIS and on-the-ground verification. Priority sites were selected with community members, who now lead nursery work and planting.

The next phase links restoration to livelihoods: local youth are being trained as restoration technicians and monitors, creating green jobs that keep the work going long after planting season.
